The Spanish Grand Prix, the first European round of the Formula One season, takes place at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona this weekend with world champion Jenson Button attempting to win the race for the second year running.
Button raced to victory from pole position last year when with Brawn GP as his charge to world championship glory continued at a rapid pace. He heads to this year's event holding the lead in the drivers' standings once again following two victories for new team McLaren from the opening four Grands Prix.
Despite sitting fifth in the drivers' standings, Red Bull driver Sebastien Vettel is favourite to take both pole position and race victory in Spain and remains at the head of the market to be crowned world champion. He has qualified in pole position in three of the four events this season, but his only victory came in Malaysia when he was not at the head of the grid.
The home fans will be hoping Fernando Alonso can add to the popular victory he earned in 2006 as a Renault driver. He started with success on his Ferrari debut in this year's season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix but has missed out on the podium in the three subsequent races.
His hopes of success will be strengthened by the record of Ferrari in the Spanish Grand Prix. The Italian team have won the race 11 times in total, including most recently in 2007 and 2008 with Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen. Of the drivers, Michael Schumacher's six wins make him the only multiple-Spanish Grand Prix winning driver in the line-up.
