The 97th Tour de France, cycling's most famous and prestigious event, begins in Rotterdam in Holland on July 3rd and runs for three weeks before culminating in the traditional finish along the Champs-Elysees in Paris on July 25th.
The gruelling cycle race sees competitors cover almost 3600 kilometres across 21 stages, including the prologue which starts the race in Rotterdam, with the riders enjoying just two rest days during the three week tour. The tour moves from the Netherlands, through Belgium and then on to France before finishing in Paris.
Among the field will be the reigning champion Alberto Contador from Spain, who won it for a second time last year, as well as the American Lance Armstrong, who won the Tour de France on seven successive occasions between 1999-2006. The wins make him the most successful rider in the history of the Tour de France. The tour will be Armstrong's last.
Twenty-two teams will take part in the 2010 edition with Contador leading the Astana team and Armstrong heading up Team Radioshack.
