So after 25 years Carol Vorderman is leaving that university student staple - Countdown. The good news? Channel 4 is looking for someone to fill her shoes once she has gone - all they need is to be a maths wizz with charm and charisma - that’s me out then! If you reckon you could be the new Carol Vorderman, then get on over to the Channel 4 website, where you can apply. You don’t have to be female, just good at maths and have a high level of literacy.
The job doesn’t start until Jan 2009, but you should get you applications in as soon as possible.

Also, Des O’Connor is also leaving Countdown after over 500 shows. He will be leaving in November, but Channel 4 will not be looking at the general public for a new presenter. So you can’t be Des only Carol! However, they will announce who will be taking over from Des O’Connor later on this year.

The Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt is now officially the fastest man in the world over both 100m and 200m after his recent runs in the Chinese Olympics. Bolt already held the world record for fastest time over 100m, which he had set earlier this year in New York, but he went even faster on his way to claiming gold in the 100m at the Olympics - he ran it in 9.69 seconds. That is very fast, and he wasn’t even trying at the end, so he could have gone quicker. However, he was saving his best for last, in the 200m final he also set a new world record on his way to claiming his second gold medal of the Olympics, he clocked in at 19.30 seconds, what seemed like miles ahead of his nearest opposition. What makes this amazing is that the world record he beat was set by Michael Johnson in 1996 - it was considered almost a freak result, and was never expected to be beaten. Yet it was. With ease. Simply amazing! Usain Bolt may well be the best sprinter the world has ever seen.

However, I reckon that in the next year or so he may break one or both of the records that he set, as he improves. After all, we must remember that the guy is only 22 – imagine how fast he could be after another years training!

In the wake of their first album and festival appearances, it appears that John McClure has decided that the music industry is too cynical and money driven, and that he wants nothing to do with it once Reverend and the Makers release their next album.  even going as far as to say that he is going to get a job as a pedal taxi driver once the album, The French Kiss in the Chaos, is completed.

I think the best quote from McClure about his loathing of the music industry has to be this one:

I feel like a sore thumb in a piranha pool in this industry. I don’t like the way it’s all run by rich men in their 50s who went to private school. It’s not something I want to be part of.

Brilliant.  I guess that if all musicians felt like this the industry would fall apart, and be replaced by something better.  Though due to the amount of money involved, I doubt that will happen in the next few years.

McClure is also in another band, Mongrel, which also contain an ex member of the Arctic Monkeys and a current member of Babyshambles, and it appears that he is going to abandon them as well, making a complete break from the industry.

Now all we have to do is see if he sticks to his word!

First of all, I have to say that the organisers of V festival were very brave in booking Amy Winehouse. Since V festival is held at two different locations, it required having Winehouse able to sing and at the right place two nights in a row, and as we all know, she has a reputation for being very erratic. However, it seems to have paid off, as she turned up, and sang when she was required too. Almost. She turned up 20 minutes late to the Stafford part of the festival, and was booed on stage by all her loving fans. Then, when she dedicated a song to her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, she was booed again. I guess it has to be mentioned that her husband is in jail serving a 27 month prison sentence for assault and perverting the course of justice.

Only turning up 20 minutes late has to be a great win for V festival, as most people would have just presumed that she wouldn’t turn up at all and would just send the next scheduled musical act on without even checking to see if she turned up or not. Guess it goes to show that festivals bring out the best in people!

So there is a new Tomb Raider game out soon.  If anyone remembers the previous game in the series - it was below par and was pretty much universally slated, that won’t be any cause for celebration.  However apparently the new Lara Croft game - Tomb Raider: Underworld-  is the first Tomb Raider game built from the ground up for the next generation consoles, as opposed to something that has been hacked together from whatever bits of code were lying about I guess.  But enough of all this talk of computer games, there is something far far better to talk about.

There is a new Lara Croft model and she is a 23 year old ex receptionist from Croydon who has been a display gymnast for 12 years and has represented Great Britain in competitions.  Woo.  So the new Tomb Raider is a 23 year old gymnast.  We can’t complain about that choice.

Check out this YouTube video for a quick idea of what she looks like in her Tomb Raider kit.

Good stuff.  Though whether or not this will make the game any good is another matter, but they’ve sold me on the concept already.  Heck, I remember when Tomb Raider 2 was the bees knees - the Venice level was amazing!

Here is a story for you if you like either Paris Hilton or MySpace.  Paris Hilton is now dating the 42 year old MySpace cofounder and CEO Chris DeWolfe.  Fun times.  Is MySpace still relevant?  Apparently DeWolfe has been throwing a lot of parties in the Hamptons and Paris Hilton has been attending them all, and it has been mentioned by sources close to Paris Hilton that the two are in fact dating.   Seeing as MySpace was sold for $580M in cash to FOX Interactive Media, it is probable that DeWolfe is worth a little bit of cash, so can show Paris Hilton the fun times and gifts that she so obviously deserves.

Though I have to admit the thing that surprised me the most was finding out that Paris Hilton is actually 27, I always thought she was about 22, though seeing as the first time I heard of her was bout 4 years ago, when a certain DVD was released, I obviously neglected to remember the fact that people age.  Can you believe that Paris Hilton is 27?  Exactly, she looks like a vague early 20ish girl, and probably will do for a very long time.

So the first week of the Barclays Premiership is over, and what a weekend it was. Chelsea looked a class above, United were held to a draw, and Hull won!

So what were the results?

Aston Villa 4-2 Man City
Chelsea 4-0 Portsmouth
Man Utd 1-1 Newcastle
Arsenal 1-0 West Brom
Bolton 3-1 Stoke
Everton 2-3 Blackburn
Hull 2-1 Fulham
Middlesbrough 2-1 Tottenham
Sunderland 0-1 Liverpool
West Ham 2-1 Wigan

Some surprising results, but at the end of the day, its the first weekend - this isn’t going to give any sort of indication as to how the end of the season is going to end up - well, other than the whole Stoke thing. Fun times!

My money is on a Chelsea / Manchester United race to the finish line, but I think Chelsea’s depth wills see them through this year. Maybe even the champions league this year? Liverpool and Arsenal will disappoint even more than last year I think. Who knows - I was entirely wrong last year - I thought Chelsea would romp home by at least 10 points and that Liverpool would win the Champions League. Obviously I was very wrong, so I will probably be wrong again this year!

Only one match into the Premiership, and Stoke have already been given the title of relegation certainties.  Not a very nice thing to do, but hey, no one said it was easy in the Premiership.  After a 3-1 beating by Bolton, they have already been written off by everyone, and in fact I have heard discussion as to whether or not they are going to do better than Derby did last year, or if they are going to do worse than 11 points. It must be rather galling if you are a Stoke supporter and there are already discussions like that.

In fact, Stoke are seen as such strong relegation favorites, that the bookmakers Paddy Power has already decided to pay out on Stoke City being relegated to the championship, and have paid out over £30,000.

Are Stoke going to go straight back down to the championship?  the bookies say yes, newspapers and pundits say yes, I reckon they will, and I think you would have to be a very optimistic Stoke fan to say that they will definitely not be relegated.  Obviously we will only know near the end of the season, and I for one do hope that they don’t pull a Derby, but manage to at least do themselves and the city of Stoke at least slightly proud.

Noel Gallagher, while on BBC Radio 1 announcing Oasis’ latest tour dates, managed to insult several different musical acts in a very short amount of time. I would imagine that maybe he was doing it for the attention, because he is sure going to get a lot of it now.

He compared Amy Winehouse to a destitute horse, which I think is a tad unfair. Maybe. He also renamed scouting for girls to scouting for idiots, which I don’t think really makes much sense as a band name, but hey, who are we to argue with Noel Gallagher? He then slagged off Mark Ronson, saying that he needed to pick up a guitar and learn how to play a few chords, rather than just ruining other peoples songs.

Then, to top it all off, he said that the Kaiser Chiefs were just a new look Monkees, and then said “I did drugs for 18 years and I never got that bad as to say, ‘You know what? I think the Kaiser Chiefs are brilliant.’” I think that means that he thinks that the Kaiser chiefs are rubbish.

Oh, and then he announced Oasis tour dates. You can read more about them here.

The 2008 Chinese Olympics haven’t yet finished, and we have already done better than most people had hoped for.  Okay there were some failures - diving anyone?  However there were a lot of success with more still to come - in a couple of events on Saturday the worst a Great British competitor can get is Silver, so not too bad!

The tally at this moment in time is 7 Gold, 3 Silver and 7 bronze, more medals a certainty. It looks like we may well top our medal tally from 2004, which was 9 gold, 9 silver and 12 bronze. However, just to put it in perspective, in 2004, the Americans got 36 gold, 39 silver and 27 bronze.

Everyone keeps talking about how this is just practice for the 2012 Olympics which, if anyone had missed the news coverage, is being hosted in London.  However, i say that it is good that we are winning stuff at the moment, even though the Olympics seems to be the most random mishmash of sports and players ever.  There is baseball in the Olympics, but if you play baseball in America for a team in the MLB, you wont play in the Olympics as they will not let their players play.  This means that all major talent is sucked out of Olympic baseball.  What about football - have a look at the teams involved for this.

Also, did you know that tug of war used to be an Olympic sport?  It was dropped for the 1924 Olympics.  Gutting, as that would be worth watching in my opinion.  For a comprehensive list of what is and isn’t in the Olympics, as ever Wikipedia can provide you with at least a roughly accurate answer.
