The French Open 2010

The French Open is the second of tennis' four Grand Slam events and is play at Roland Garros in Paris in May.

Along with the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, the French Open makes up the sport's four majors. Of the four, it is the only one played on clay courts with the 2010 tournament beginning on May 24 and running for two weeks.

The current men's champion is Roger Federer, who ended his hoodoo in the tournament when defeating Roger Soderling 12 months ago. That victory ended Rafael Nadal's French Open dominance, the Spaniard having won the previous four years including when defeating Federer three times in the final. The four successive titles match the achievement of Bjorn Borg who won the tournament in 1978-1981, the final four of his six wins.

Nadal, the most successful of the present players, is favourite to regain the French Open title with bookmakers going 4/9 about his chances.

The women's singles final was won last year by Svetlana Kuznetsova, who overcame fellow Russian Dinira Safina in the final.

Chris Evert holds the best record in the women's draw in the open era having won the French Open on seven occasions, one more than Steffi Graf. Of the current crop, Justine Henin's four wins make her the most successful.
