How do you know a film you’ve never seen is bad? And how do you know a film you’ve never seen is REALLY bad.
In the case of Tom Cruise’s Valkyrie, a story of a posh Nazi who tried to assassinate Hitler, we know it is bad when it was pulled from release.
The delay meant the worthy film would not be in contention for any major awards, like the Oscars. So how do we know it’s a really bad. Well, this bit we are less certain but the film has been delayed, AGAIN.
The perma-grinned Scientologist has been boss of United Artists since 2006, and it has proposed the film be held back for three scenes to be reshot.
Previously, the release was pushed back from June to October because the director had not shot a battle scene that explained how Claus von Stauffenberg, Cruise’s character, lost a hand and an eye in North Africa.
The film is seen as critical for UA after the mega flop of Lions for Lambs, even though heavyweights Cruise, Robert Redford and Meryl Streep were involved.
Clark Woods, president of distribution for the distributor told the Times the delay was because of an opportunity and lack of other release alternatives: ‘When an opening became available for President’s Day Weekend (Feb 13), we seized the opportunity. Moving into a big holiday weekend is the right move.’
Yes, bank holiday weekend, we’re all stuck for something to do, let’s go to the cinema.
