Spidey dumps Maguire?

Has Tobey Maguire been axed from Spider-Man 4?

Rumours are circulating that the star of the last three has been dropped for the next one.

Apparently he was only contracted for the first three, plus there's speculation that he won't be signed up for more as the last one didn't do as well at the box office.

According to our info, it took around $900m. Yeah, that's everyone's idea of a flop, right?

Besides, why blame Maguire when the film itself just wasn't that good?

Anyway, the plan is to give the franchise a younger feel – that must be encouraging for Maguire, 32 – and bring in Almost Famous star Patrick Fugit or, possibly, Michael Angarano – who's about to be seen in Jackie Chan / Jet Li actioner The Forbidden Kingdom.

There's no word yet on whether Sam Raimi will be back in the director's chair – or if Kirsten Dunst will return as Mary-Jane.

Judging by the reported policy, she'll probably be replaced with a foetus.
