It’s never a dull moment at Steven Soderbergh’s place.
The director, probably most famous here for the Ocean’s Eleven series – and his debut feature Sex, Lies and Videotape – is known for his refusal to be pigeonholed.
Which explains the low key debut, the glossy George Clooney starrers, Erin Brokovich, reinventions of Kafka plays, experimental art house films like Full Frontal, remakes of Russian arthouse classics and Traffic. Indeed.
With his four hour epic Che Guevara biopic Guerilla impressing critics at various festivals, Soderbergh has announced his next project will be... Cleo, a 3-D, live-action rock ’n’ roll musical about Cleopatra.
According to Variety, Soderbergh’s dream casting for the film will be Catherine Zeta-Jones as the iconic Egyptian queen and Hugh ‘Wolverine’ Jackman as lover, Marc Antony.
Sadly – or possibly happily – we have a few years to wait for this one, as Soderbergh has other films to finish first, including a Liberace film, starring Michael Douglas as the flamboyant pianist and Matt Damon as his partner, and The Girlfriend Experience which gives porn star Sasha Grey her first straight acting role.
And after that... who knows?
But our money’s on an Elvis biopic. Told in real time.
With a genetically recreated King.
On the moon.
