I Am Legend is one of the best ¾ films ever. Yes, 75% of it was excellent, the rest just not so good.
But Will Smith, who does a great job playing the isolated scientist Robert Neville stranded in New York with nasties, will get a chance to make a 100% film classic as the green light has been given for a prequel to the film.
And the good news for Smithy – who turned 40 yesterday – is that the flick will be steered by I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence and DB Weiss will scribe the script.
So there’s a great chance to fill in the backstory of why New York turned into the no-go area and why those subterranean nasties are well, so nasty. Maybe they’re just a bit unloved. '
And why a prequel? Well, to get Smith’s involvement we need to travel back in time as the character dies at the end of I Am Legend - unless DB Weiss develops a cunning yet unbelievable Lazarus-type twist.
Not so enchanting is the thought of Will Smith inn a Hancock second run out.
Handsome but icy co-star Charlize Theron has hinted she would be up for a sequel: ‘If everybody's on board, I would be an idiot (not to do it)... Riding the Will Smith train is a really nice train to ride.’
Just ask Mrs Smith.
