Downey Jr: He pulled off Chaplin, what about Sherlock.

Robert Downey Jr will play the super sleuth Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie’s forthcoming movie adaptation of the iconic Sir Arthur Conan Doyle character.

Downey Jr, last seen in summer blockbuster smash Iron Man will don the famous deerstalker for Ritchie’s take on Holmes which will also draw upon the popular comic book series, Sherlock Holmes.

Ritchie has a fourth gangster flick Rocknrolla earmarked for an autumn release, the buzz is that Mr Madge has hit a timely return to form, Downey Jr’s stock has shot through the roof since Iron Man, a sequel is on the cards and he will next be seen in Ben Stiller’s, Tropic Thunder.

As we reported last week, Hollywood has gone Holmes crazy. Comedy big hitters Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell are set to play Holmes and Watson in producer Judd Apatow’s comedy take on the opium-addled detective.

Ritchie and his gang start shooting in October, Dr Watson has yet to be cast...
