Final Potter: Two parts

Coming to a cinema near you. Three more times.
Harry Potter

The last Harry Potter novel will be made into a two-part film.

The weighty, plot-heavy Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows had, according to Variety, been causing Warner Bros problems but a split could be the best way of bringing their hugely successful film franchise to a satisfying close.

Variety reports that director David Yates will indeed direct and Steve Kloves will write the screenplay. Yates is the popular choice, having recently won the Empire Award for his work on The Order of the Phoenix. He's currently making the sixth instalment, The Half Blood Prince which is due for release later this year.

Kloves is also a Potter regular. If he adapts The Deathly Hallows, that means he'll have written either six of the seven adaptatations or seven of the eight, if you see what we mean.

Ironically, the only one he didn't adapt was Order of the Phoenix.

Quite how they're going to split the 784-page final book remains to be seen, however Warner Bros bigwigs Alan Horn and Jeff Robinov are expected to discuss the plans at ShoWest later today.

The franchise has so far taken an incredible $4.5 BILLION at the international box office. That means it's now the most successful franchise in film, having last year beaten James Bond to the title.

The first instalment of Deathly Hallows is expected November 2010, with the final part slated for May 2011.
