Mia decisions for Burton

Mia Wasikowska

Tim Burton. Alice In Wonderland.

Why on earth didn't we think of that before?

The two go together like cheese and pickle, gin and tonic and, er, Jordan. And Disney agree.

The eccentric director will tackle the Lewis Carroll classic as his next project and, after an apparently lengthy search, has also cast his female lead.

And, as befits someone who slips down a long rabbit hole, she comes from Down Under.

Aussie actress Mia Wasikowska will be communing with rabbits and Mad Hatters and hedgehogs and the like in Burton's adaptation, which has been written by Linda Woolverton who also wrote The Lion King. So that bodes well.

The film is a big budget blend of live action and performance-capture, and will also be presented in Disney's excellent Digital 3-D. Much like the reissue of Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas in fact.

If Wasikowska looks familiar, you must be downloading TV. Or come from that land Down Under yourself. She was apparently a regular on Aussie show All Saints and can now be seen in HBO's In Treatment.

Moviegoers will also see Ms W in Ed Zwick's war drama Defiance – opposite Bond star Daniel Craig – and  opposite Hilary Swank in Amelia, Mira Nair's biopic of Amelia Earhart.

It's all very exciting but one to put on the back burner. Shooting doesn't start until November, sadly.
