Ashcroft - solo again?

Richard Ashcroft. Alone again, naturally.

Well that didn't last long, did it?

The Verve reunion has suffered a bit of a setback with lead singer Richard Ashcroft announcing that he's planning a return to solo material.

For the record, he made the announcement just over two weeks before the reunion album is even released.

The band, who split 11 years ago had got back together for the album and a series of festival dates, including a headline slot at Glastonbury.

But Ashcroft apparently doesn't view it as a long term option.

Talking to Radio One's Zane Lowe, Ashcroft revealed his plans and thinking.

'I will continue my solo stuff,' he explained. 'But it seemed a shame to leave this thing dormant when there is so much talent there.'

'This thing' in case you were wondering is the band who enjoyed smash hits such The Drugs Don't Work and Bittersweet Symphony.

The 'solo stuff' is Ashcroft's own material which includes smash hits such as... well, give us a few minutes, we're sure we'll think of something.

The band went down a storm at Glastonbury, despite Ashcroft's claims – denied by the festival – that the organisers had been trying to book Keane.

'I've never done a bungee jump because I don't need to do one,' added Ashcroft slightly enigmatically, 'because that's what performance is all about.

'It's about jumping out of the aeroplane. And that's the biggest jump I've done in a long time, so the afterglow was pretty long after Glastonbury.'

As usual, we're glad we've got that cleared up then.
