Leona: Bleeding triumph

Give that girl a pat on the back
lewis leona

Yesterday we told you how British singer Leona Lewis was in a head-to-head race with Usher for the US number one.

We're delighted to report that Usher has been shown the door. Heh, see what we did there?

Yes indeedy, Hackney's very own budding soul legend has become the first British female solo artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 in 21 years with Bleeding Love.

The last British female solo artist to achieve the feat? Would you believe Kim Wilde with her Supremes cover, You Keep Me Hangin' On?

More importantly Leona's the first British female to debut at No1 since Sheena Easton in 1981 with Nine To Five. Or Morning Train as the Yanks called it, so they didn't confuse a diminutive Scottish brunette with Dolly Parton.

Yeah. That must happen all the time...

Leona's been reasonably quiet so far about the triumph... but Simon Cowell hasn't. Surprise, surprise.

'I am incredibly proud of Leona,' announced music's Jose Mourinho. 'What she has achieved in the past year is simply amazing. I am very, very happy for her.'

And, presumably, happy for himself, given that Leona's signed to his label?

As for the singer? She's clearly resting her voice so said on her website: 'Well I really don't know what to say, I'm so overwhelmed right now. I'm getting to share my music with people around the world and it's beyond my wildest dreams. From the bottom of my heart thank u all so much, it's because of you that I am able to do this.'

The only thing she's not able to do, according to the Sun, is buy a house in Hackney. She and long-term boyfriend Lou offered £500K for a house recently.

But the seller found out who was offering the cash and upped the price to £600K.

'It was quite upsetting,' revealed a friend. 'They had their heart set on a property and offered the asking price. But the seller thought she was a pop star and could afford more, so he upped the price. It’s cruel.'

If we may quote the Pub Landlord on this one... Hackney property seller? Shame on you.
