Oasis: Same again lads?
Oasis Dig

Dig Out Your Soul

Remember the days of Definitely Maybe and What’s The Story, when Oasis albums were essential purchases?

Halfway through Dig Out Your Soul’s oh so familiar retread of the Gallaghers’ greatest riffs – or about 10 minutes after you’ve started yawning – you’ll yearn for them. And, if you have any sense, you’ll also press eject.

It’s not that Dig Out Your Soul is bad. It’s not. Well, yes, it is lyrically – Noel Gallagher, who’s written six of the 11 tracks here, has always been better at music than words – but plenty of non-discerning sales reps / steering wheel thumpers will lap it up. It’s just that for those seeking experimentation – outside of imitating a different period of Beatles music – this is an album best avoided in favour of something by, ooh, we don’t know, Damon Albarn?

There are moments where it almost all turns into something greater – I’m Outta Time and Ain’t Got Nothin’ may ignore the rules of grammar but do it for memorable balladry and flat out rock respectively – but, for the most part, this is the sound of a band treading water for the umpteenth time. As for Liam’s trademark swagger? It’s more slightly disgruntled middle aged dad than angry young rocker. It’s time for a change, chaps.

They say: ‘…seems to underline Oasis's reductive view of music, the nagging suspicion that, far from being steeped in the nuances of classic rock, they've only actually heard the Greatest Hits.’ The Guardian.

We say: Listen to Blur, listen to Keane, hell listen to Kaiser Chiefs. Just listen to something that’s not the &^%$ing White Album

Best bit: I’m Outta Time.
