Keira Knightley’s finest impression of sucking a lemon was on show last night at the world premiere of her first major lead, The Duchess at Leicester Square.
The strong jawed, chisel cheeked wonder looked half decent (it must be admitted) but with all that pinched posing, she can expect a case of cramp jowl this morning.
Knightley’s costume drama is the first filmed she has opened. And by opened, we mean it’s her name on the billboards, her face, her film. A rare event in Hollywood for a female.
Still expectations are high she’ll carry it off and step into the multi-million super A-list she seems destined to reach.
And to think she’s still only 23 years old.
For what it’s worth, she plays Georgiana Spencer, an 18th Century noblewoman who embarks on a loveless marriage. And already she has received positive reviews.
She told the BBC: ‘I think she was an incredible woman and the fact that the film's getting good reviews is obviously really exciting.’
Speaking of the cast she said:
‘I thought the opportunity to work with Ralph Fiennes and Charlotte Rampling and Saul Dibb, the director, is one that I couldn't pass up.
‘So I went for the corsets and the wig and just thought: 'I might as well.’’
But do the corsets spring open and the bodices rip? Sadly, she keeps most of the goods under wrap, so it looks like a film to be endured with the girlfriend.
And you can always pass the time by imagining a certain 23-year-old riding side saddle, so to speak.
