KFP2-3D

KFP: $600 million and counting…
Kung Fu panda

KFP2-3D. No it’s not a robot in a new George Lucas film.

It’s because the Kung Fu Panda sequel will be in 3D.

After the almighty success of the first film – according to Variety, $626m worldwide and counting, with the pre-Christmas DVD release yet to come – DreamWorks have greenlit the inevitable sequel.

Remarkably they’ve also picked a release date. June 3, 2011.

Nothing like being organised, eh?

So far, Jack Black and Angelina Jolie have agreed to reprise their roles and the film will be directed by the original’s head of story, Jennifer Yuh Nelson.

The studio is also planning to release the film in an IMAX version – imagine that belly on that screen – and, as with all DreamWorks animated releases for next year and beyond, it will be released in stereoscopic 3D.

The film is apparently DreamWorks Animation's most successful non-sequel ever. Which doesn’t sound too impressive, until you realise that means it was bigger than Shrek.

For the record, the DVD will be released on Nov 9.
