Rickrolling to MTV's

Where did it all go right for Rick

Who said Americans don't do irony – they've just nominated our dear old 80s pop quiff Rick Astley for best act ever at this year's MTV Europe Music Awards.

Needless to say, this is the first nomination Rick has received and he’s up against U2, Britney Spears, Chrsitina Aquilera, Green Day and Tokio Hotel.

So in other words, he's a shoo-in.

But really, this is a fan vote and Astley is riding on the wave of the strange web-based phenomenon of Rickrolling, where webheads unwittingly follow a link to discover Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up video blasting out.

It's led to millions of plays of the 1987 No1 hit and a sort of rebirth of the Kingston upon Thames pop star. You suspected it’s a case of it's so cheesy it almost good again.

And if he were to win, it would bring a welcome sense of humour to the corporate nonsense of MTV award ceremonies.

The last one in the States had Russell Brand make a few edgy jokes for which he had to immediately apologise.

Time to book Jim Davidson for the next one then.
