US takes a Peep

Not a Peep: Mitchell & Webb go American. Sort of.

American remakes of UK comedies have a mixed reputation. For every The Office there’s a Coupling or a Fawlty Towers.

So we’re really not sure how we feel about this: Peep Show is getting a US makeover.

Sadly Mitchell and Webb won’t be involved. Instead, the Odd Couple roles will see someone called Rob Chester Smith as slacker Jez and give Brad Morris the chance to step into David Mitchell’s shoes as Mark, the uptight office worker.

Spike TV are the people who’ve decided to remake the show for the US market and they’ve recently shot the pilot episode in Chicago.

That was directed by Dylan Kidd, who made an excellent (and little seen) dark comedy called Roger Dodger. That’s certainly a good sign.

Another good sign is discovering that Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong, who’ve co-written the UK show, penned the pilot script.

‘This is a huge audience favourite in the UK,’ said producer Chris Coelen.

‘In adapting the format, we had a lot of funny material to draw from, but we slightly tweaked it to make it more American.’

In the meantime, season six is of the UK is expected to shoot shortly. Just to show the US how it should be done. Possibly.
