It doesn’t look like Cristiano Ronaldo will be going anywhere in the summer. Manchester United chief executive David Gill has put a lid on the rumours that the Portuguese wing wizard is heading to Real Madrid.
It’s great news for United fans ahead of the Champions League final against Chelsea in Moscow.
‘He's got four more years with us, has been with us for five and we're sure he'll be with us for many years to come,’ Gill told BBC Radio 5 Live.
‘We're keeping him. We've no intention of letting him go and will make sure he's happy. He's going nowhere. ‘He's at a great club, winning trophies, and enjoys it immensely here, so why would he want to leave?’ added Gill.
Real Madrid have been sniffing around Ronaldo for some time, coach Bernd Schuster recently played down the link which has irked United in recent months.
‘I would like to have a lot of players,’ said Schuster. ‘But I don't think it is possible that Cristiano Ronaldo will be with us.’
United fans will feel relief that the door is closed for the time being on speculation of their prized asset heading abroad. For Chelsea talk of Frank Lampard heading to Inter Milan to join his old boss Jose Mourinho is untimely.
Sources in Milan reveal that Lamps is to sign a £5.8m a year contract with the Serie A giants, a claim which Lampard’s agent Steve Kutner vehemently denies.
‘There is no truth in it at all,’ Kutner said.
‘I don't know why Inter Milan would think this. Nobody has talked to me and I am good friends with the owner, Massimo Moratti. I took Paul Ince there, I took Patrick Vieira there - if there was something on I am sure I would know.’
One player who looks likely to be shown the door this summer is fallen Barcelona idol Ronaldinho.
‘Ronaldinho needs new challenges and it's normal that when a cycle ends the most emblematic people from that cycle leave,’ Club President Juan Laporta said.
Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o is also likely to leave the Nou Camp.
Somebody with more money than sense could snap up this duo for a snip if they can meet their obscene wage demands.
What odds one or both players running out in the sky blue of Manchester City next season?
