If you’re an Arsenal fan, it will be best to look away now.
A team that promised so much and played exquisite passing football has ended up trophy-less yet again.
Losses to Liverpool in the Champions League and the 2-1 defeat by Man Utd in the League effectively ended their season.
And for once, manager Arsene Wenger seems to be the only man in the world not to know why.
William Gallas – or rather leadership - is the weak link.
The Arsenal captain has shown himself to be the least inspiring captain of a club that used to revel in bombastic, shouting, ranting Tony Adam-style leadership.
And Wenger seems oblivious or unwilling to admit that his team of excellent foreigners needs a homegrown backbone.
It’s no coincidence that Man Utd (Neville and Ferdinand), Liverpool (Gerard) and Chelsea (Terry) all have English captains.
They know what it takes to dig in and win matches in the Premier League when the going gets tough. They understand and have the backing of the fans. They shout, cajole and demand more effort when under pressure.
Recently Arsenal have been 1-0 up against Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United and lost every game. Again, no coincidence.
And the wounded soldier of Wenger, blinking and disbelieving in the post-match interview, claiming it was all down to bad referring, bad luck and a conspiracy shows the great Frenchman as fallible.
