Zola: Soon to be skint manager
Gianfranco Zola

All that talk of credit crunches has brought on a recession. And turned the global financial markets to jelly.

Never mind, you thought, we can take our minds of it all by watching some football.

Unless, that is, you’re a West Ham fan. Because the Hammers have become the first team to really feel the pinch as Icelandic owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson had a 40 per cent stake in Landsbanki bank, the bank that’s just been taken over by the Icelandic government.

Just to prove it never rains but pours, West Ham’s kit sponsor were the holiday firm XL who folded a few weeks ago.

And as well as losing his multi-million stake in the bank, Gudmundsson is also believed to have guaranteed loans of around £100m for XL.

Oh, and not forgetting the £30m West Ham may have to pay Sheffield United after they lost the Carlos Tevez legal case.

So, know anyone that wants to buy some players? Because we, alongside most of the papers, believe that new manager Gianfranco Zola will be forced to sell most, if not all, of his big guns such as keeper Robert Green, defender Matthew Upson and forwards Craig Bellamy and Dean Ashton.

Two proven forwards who can play together? Someone put Tottenham on alert.
