They’ve landed home and at last the term ’hero’ can be used and what’s more be justified.
Britain can be proud of Team GB. And not just because they achieved more than most of us expected.
So often, the media is full of terms of heroism that are so undeserved. But it turns out, Adlington, Hoy, DeGale et al surprised and surpassed the expectations of an entire nation and many more beyond these shores.
While prima donna footballers continue to astonish us with their ridiculous pay packets and even more ridiculous histrionics, the plane landed yesterday carrying REAL athletes, REAL people and REAL sportsmen and women.
At last Great Britain has a team to be proud of and a something to cheer.
While debate will continue to for the next four years as to whether this country can equal or even surpass the organisation, splendour and magnitude of Beijing, for now we can bask in the reflected glory of the lesser known genuine sporting stars who have quietly dedicated themselves, covered themselves in glory and given GB real pride.
John Terry, Lewis Hamilton, Andy Murray and the rest of you... watch and learn...if any of you produce 1% of what these guys and gals have shown, we will all idolise you too. We can all hope.
