Is this the worst weekend ever for English sport?

A football team that scraped a meagre 2-0 win against Andorra, Amir Khan getting knocked out in 54 seconds and then Lewis Hamilton being stripped of his Belgian Grand Prix victory.

And all of that swiftly followed by Scotland’s Andy Murray somehow beating Rafa Nadal to reach the final of the US Open.

That’s just pouring salt into the wound. England’s overpaid footballers once again failed to impress as they beat Andorra, a country so small that newspaper reports name the players AND the supporters. Probably.

If it hadn’t been for Joe Cole coming on as a substitute and being the first player on the pitch to look like he wanted to be there, we’d have been looking at an embarrassing 0-0 draw this morning… and the back of Fabio Capello.

That disappointment was swiftly followed by Colombian Breidis Prescott destroying Amir Khan’s reputation with two solid punches.

‘I made a stupid little mistake and couldn’t get back. I need to go back to the drawing board. ‘But I’m fine, I will come back stronger.’

Really? And what are you going to do about the glass jaw?

And finally, Lewis Hamilton was penalised 25 seconds after an incident at the Spa circuit. Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen were battling for first place on lap 42 (of 44) when they collided. Fearing an instant penalty, Hamilton let Raikkonen through.

Raikkonen later crashed out in the wet weather, leaving Hamilton to take first place. But officials decided to penalise Lewis anyway. That saw him slip to third place and give victory to – but of course – Felipe Masa, who is now just two points behind the Brit.

Oh yes. And in tennis, Scotland’s Andy Murray beat Rafa Nadal to take his (whingeing, scowly) place in the US Open. The Scot now faces Roger Federer in the final.

Seriously, it’s times like this we’re glad we’re Swiss.
