Timing, as they say, is everything.
That's certainly true of comedy and music and many other things. But we weren't aware of its importance in transfer deals.
Neither, it appears, were Liverpool's money men who, according to reports, have missed out on signing Villa midfielder Gareth Barry by 15 minutes.
Aston Villa had slapped an £18m price tag on their England international and Liverpool were dragging their heels over meeting the figure.
Villa then imposed a 5pm deadline for the deal, Liverpool missed it and the Birmingham-based club issued a statement: 'Aston Villa can announce that Gareth Barry will be staying with the club.
'A final deadline to conclude this episode was set that all parties agreed to. This deadline has passed so Gareth will remain with Villa.'
Which was a shock to Liverpool as they'd apparently asked for a 15 minute extension to sort the payment.
Liverpool are expected to keep trying to sign the player however Arsenal are also rumoured to be tabling a bid involving cash and players.
Just make sure you've got a watch, Arsene. That's all we'd say.
