Sir Alex Ferguson has put an abrupt end to months of speculation on the future of Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United.

Fergie formally nipped the ongoing speculation in the bud by declaring the want away winking winger will be United player next season.

‘The matter is closed now. He is a Manchester United player - it's finished. He'll be playing here next season believe me. It's finished,’ said an adamant Fergie.

It’s an embarrassing blow for La Liga giants Real Madrid who incurred the wrath of the Glazers after the flagrant courting of their prize asset.

Whatever the long term future of Ronaldo, it looks certain that when he recovers from an ankle operation he will turn out for United in defence of the Champions League and Premier League titles.

Real President Ramon Calderon has also admitted defeat, Real had been quiet in the transfer marker, perhaps in anticipation of a mammoth payout for Ronaldo.

On Tuesday they signed Rafael van der Vaart and Calderon intimated that there would be no more opening of the Real wallet this summer.

‘Van der Vaart is the first and possibly the only signing of the summer for Real Madrid,’ Calderon said.

Manchester United fans may feel some closure but can anticipate going through this whole saga again when the January transfer window opens.
