It’s now four wins from four as England storm toward qualification for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.
Wayne Rooney inspired Fabio Capello’s men to a 3-1 victory over a stubborn Belarus in Minsk with a tidy brace.
Fab’s men are playing with confidence and vigour and despite conceding a first-half leveller, showed spirit and determination to take the minnows to the sword.
Steven Gerrard opened the scoring with the sort of strike that Liverpool fans have become accustomed to but one that England fans have rarely seen.
Good work from the brilliant Rooney opened the door for Gerrard to clinically sidefoot home from 25 yards.
Despite the temporary blip when Belarus carved out an equaliser after 21 passes - some football that belied their lowly status – England and Rooney took to the second half like a team possessed.
Rooney put England ahead neatly, dummying in the box before cooly lifting the ball over the advancing Belarussian keeper Yury Zhevnov.
Belarus’ fate was sealed when Emile Heskey made space on the left before finding Rooney in the box. The Manchester United defender made it five goals in three games with a neat sidefoot.
England can take many positives from the game; Steven Gerrard had his best game in an England shirt for some time and could have scored a second but hit the post after rounding Zhevnov.
Rooney was delighted with his performance;
‘I think it’s probably the best I've ever played for England,’ said Roo.
‘I'm enjoying my football, getting on the ball and scoring and making goals.’
The Cap is beginning to fit.
