Tottenham Hotspur have won a game of football.
No, it’s not a misprint. The north Londoners, who looked so impressive pre-season, finally worked out that you need to score more than the opposition and promptly did it.
Admittedly it was against the less than stellar Wisla Krakow side but hey a win is a win. And it all came about thanks to supersub Frazier Campbell.
The former Hull City star was a sweetener in the Berbatov transfer, and is on loan from Manchester United for a season.
And he proved his worth to set up Darren Bent for a 73rd minute winner.
Tottenham had taken the lead on 33 minutes when David Bentley converted Aaron Lennon’s pass… and then conceded the lead 67 seconds later.
New players, newish manager… same old Tottenham defence. But a win is a win, however scrappily it was achieved.
It was a good night all round for British clubs in the UEFA cup. Everton managed a 2-2 draw against Standard Liege, Manchester City won 2-1 away at Omonia in Cyprus – thus ruining our planned ‘Omonia stings’ gag this morning – and Aston Villa put three past Litex Lovech.
Which is a town in Bulgaria, apparently, not the strange woman who sang Lucky Numbers (and actually, that’s a VERY good gag… if you’re over 30.)
Result of the night though has to go to Portsmouth who beat Portuguese side Guimaraes 2-0. That gives Portsmouth a hugely impressive 100 per cent record in Europe.
Here’s hoping they can keep it going to their second ever Euro game.
