Spurs go for Hughes

Spurs go for Hughes?
Mark Hughes

Tottenham Hotspur are apparently tapping up Mark Hughes to replace Juande Ramos.

The Manchester City manager is said to have been offered a £20m, five year deal to take over the struggling Spurs side from the under pressure Spaniard.

We’re not sure who’s more misguided. Ramos for his constant tinkering this season. Or Chairman Daniel Levy for thinking he can tempt Hughes away from that Manchester City transfer budget.

Or does Levy suspect what many are thinking that Hughes’ time with that budget is limited and Manchester City will ultimately be looking for a major name to take over?

Sheikh Mansour may have said ‘we want to make it clear that Mark Hughes is absolutely integral to our plans’ but in football speak that’s about as much a guarantee of a job as the dreaded ‘vote of confidence’.

Ramos’s days with the North Londoners would appear to be at an end anyway. Two points from six games leaves Spurs languishing at the foot of the table – and the next match is against the supremely confident, in-form Hull City.

Spurs scraped through to the group stages of the UEFA cup last night with an edgy 1-1 draw in Krakow. And if Polish defender Ark Glowacki hadn’t scored an own goal, Tottenham would have crashed out.

Spurs started brightly but, after taking the lead in the 58th minute, Ramos’s defensive changes gave Krakow the advantage. The Poles pulled level in the 83rd minute leading to a frantic final seven minutes where another goal would have been enough to dump Tottenham out.

As it was though, Spurs held on for a 3-2 aggregate win.
