Spurs boss and cup king Juande Ramos has given himself an uphill task of retaining his impressive UEFA cup record.
His Spurs side will head to Eindhoven for the second leg of their last 16 clash with PSV a goal down after an error from Tottenham debutant Gilberto was seized upon by Jefferson Farfan.
Spurs paraded the Carling Cup trophy in front of the home fans, but the celebrations were short lived after the Peruvian drove home brilliantly after 33 minutes.
Questions will be asked as Spurs were outplayed and look likely to crash out in the return leg next week to an impressive PSV side.
As an added blow Jermaine Jenas is struggling to be fit after twisting his ankle. Ramos who lifted the UEFA Cup with 2006 and 2007 knows there’s room for improvement.
‘It's true we had our best starting XI but we still under-performed,’ said Ramos.
‘I've been quite disappointed with that.
‘We had our best players on the pitch but PSV were the better team.
‘You could say it was a reality check, in the matches against Birmingham and PSV we have not played as well as we could have.
‘If we want to continue in this competition we have to improve our performances or we will be out.’
It may be one long winded UEFA campaign too many that will finally dethrone the cup king.
