John Terry looks set to miss out on England’s World Cup qualifier with Kazakhstan on Saturday after a recurrence of a niggling back problem.
Terry is also a doubt for next Wednesday’s clash in Belarus.
Emile Heskey also gave Fabio Capello a scare after he limped out of Tuesday’s training session – he is expected to recover in time which should give Fab the opportunity to field his strongest side bar Terry.
Rio Ferdinand will step in as captain to steady England through two qualifiers they are expected to win comfortably.
‘The game against Kazakhstan is just as important as the Croatia game,’ said Rio.
‘The draw with Macedonia was a stark reminder that one crazy result can send things pear-shaped. Through experience of playing a lot of games for England and at club level you realise that you have to approach every game the same.
‘It is up to me and other senior players to filter it down to the younger ones.
‘Maybe we’ve not approached each game in the right way and results tell you that.’
Two senior players who have to pull their fingers out are Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.
The pair have failed to click in the centre of midfield on numerous occasions and Fab has been experimenting on the training pitch all week with both players featuring in different positions in a four man midfield.
Well at least Fabio has one more training session on Saturday at Wembley against Kazakhstan to get it right.
