Walcott: Flying in Kiev

Arsenal had to contend with Theo baiting for a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Dynamo Kiev.

While Man Utd had to settle for a 0-0 Champions League opener against Villarreal.

First up, to Old Trafford where Man Utd continue to look sluggish. They seem out of sorts with little penetration and no ruthless edge. This was not helped by the Spanish La Liga runners-up putting 11 men behind the ball and making only one decent chance throughout the game.

Still, many teams will come to Old Trafford this season with that in mind and we’d expect the guile of Tevez, Rooney, and Ronaldo (as a second-half sub), to unlock most defences. Strange too the best chances fell to two defenders; Rio Ferdinand in the first half with a lunging effort with the goalkeeper flapping and Jonny Evans with a diving header.

Villarreal hit the post but Fergie is remaining calm. Defeat at Chelsea at the weekend might see him a little more worried.

Meanwhile in the Ukraine, there are signs of the growing influence of Theo Wlacott.

Arsene Wenger was furious over both the referring and Kiev tactics that seemed to mark out the 19-year-old England hat-trick hero.

He had a rough ride throughout the game but Wenger was relieved Galls struck in the 88^th minute to take something from the match.

So no signs yet that the four English clubs will breeze into the last four this year.
