Played 19, lost 18.
No, it’s not a prediction for Spurs’ position at Christmas. It’s Celtic’s Champions League record on away games.
Defeat number 18 came last night with a 3-0 drubbing at Old Trafford, including two from Dimitar Berbatov that must have delighted the Tottenham faithful…
Not looking so surly now, is he chaps?
To say United dominated the game would be a bit of an understatement. Only 1-0 down at half time, you might have expected Celtic to make a game of it but they didn’t get the chance.
And six minutes after the break, an apparently offside Berbatov nicked his second goal.
Justice was then done when a legitimate Wayne Rooney goal was ruled out for offside… although Rooney added a brilliant third shortly after. That’s nine goals in seven games for the once out-of-sorts striker.
Meanwhile in Turkey… Remember that tough away game Arsenal were facing at Fenerbahce? And how the Gunners were going to be humiliated in the ‘group of death’?
Well, Arsenal are now one win away from qualifying. And they spanked Fenerbahce 5-2 in Turkey.
Cesc Fabregas was the main man, creating three goals and finishing off the Turkish side with clinical passing. Thanks to Cesc, Arsenal were 2-0 up after 11 minutes. Even a Silvestre own goal in the 19th minute couldn’t take the shine off the performance.
Because Arsenal added a third three minutes later.
And Fenerbahce’s unbeaten home run came to a crashing end.
Arsenal’s next Euro game? Home to Fenerbahce in two weeks. That should keep Arsene smiling then.
