Woods gets Westwood

Nearly the first British winner of USPGA since 1970

Yep, the Turkey comeback was spectacular – and we'd normally be delighted to poke fun at Peter 'Bouncing' Cech for his goalkeeping error.

But we've got to talk golf for a change as Lee Westwood came this close to winning his first major.

Instead, Tiger Woods' incredible record of never being beaten in a Major when he's been leading or in joint first place remains intact... although that could change.

Tiger sunk a 20-foot putt on the 18th to finish one under and force an unlikely play-off today against America's Rocco Mediate.

Westwood, who'd gone into the final day level with Woods, finished one stroke behind. 'It was my first real chance of a Major and I came up one short,' said Lee.

'I gave myself a sniff and I’m more convinced than ever now that I can go on and win a title.'

To do that though will require beating Woods. And if you can't beat Tiger when he's injured, when can you?

Tiger's knee-problems have been an issue all week, and he has been playing in obvious pain in this his first tournament since an operation 10-weeks ago.

And there must now be a chance he will not be fit enough to play in the Open at Birkdale next month.

This latest operation simply has not worked and Woods will probably need further surgery to clean out the knee.

However, despite being bent double in pain after his second tee shot, Woods kept it together enough to stay in the race.

Even so, he still needed a birdie on the par five final hole to force the play-off and that looked unlikely after a tee shot into a bunker.

However he recovered and reached the green in three, but with a 20-foot putt required to stay level.

And, being Tiger, he sunk it. 'The green was not exactly smooth. I just told myself to stay committed to the stroke and if it goes in it goes in,' explained Tiger.

'Luckily, it did.' No. Luck is when we do it down at the municipal course surrounded by cheeky taxi drivers.

Skill is when you do it in pain in front of millions with several hundred thousand dollars at stake.
