Keegan. Doing the management hokey cokey.

A couple of days ago we reported that Kevin Keegan hadn’t actually left Newcastle.

Everyone thought he had, but he hadn’t. They were talking it through, it was all rattling towards resolution.

And now it’s been resolved. And Keegan IS out.

The problems came as Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, and sidekick Dennis Wise, allegedly sold Keegan’s team from out around him and brought in players he didn’t want.

Keegan pointed the finger and walked. And now it looks like the fans might be behind their Geordie Messiah.

They’d already threatened to stay away from the Hull game in a week’s time. Now it looks like the ‘fan strike’ may last even longer.

The bitter feud isn’t going to get better any time soon. According to the backs, Keegan didn’t strike a deal for compensation and Ashley is considering suing his ex-manager for breach of contract.

And for around £2m.

In a statement, Keegan explained: ‘I’ve been working desperately hard to find a way forward with the directors, but sadly that has not proved possible.

‘It’s my opinion a manager must have the right to manage and that clubs should not impose upon any manager any player that he does not want.

‘It remains my fervent wish to see Newcastle do well in the future and I feel incredibly sorry for the players, staff and most importantly the supporters. I have been left with no choice other than to leave.’

As reported previously, Spurs assistant Gus Poyet is favourite to replace Keegan, but he’s not going to get an easy ride as an Ashley man.

‘Ashley doesn’t realise the love that man Keegan has for this football club,’ said Frank Gilmour, chairman of the Independent Newcastle United Supporters’ Association. ‘Fans have long memories and I don’t think he’ll ever be forgiven for this.’
