Break out the old horse jokes. Gianfranco Zola may be back in the English game this evening.
The former Chelsea legend is expected to tell West Ham today whether it’s yay or – ho ho – neigh when it comes to being their new manager.
Last night he guided Italy’s Under-21s to the Euro 2009 play-offs with a 1-1 draw against Croatia.
As the player explained: ‘I did not want to speak yet about West Ham out of respect for the Italian FA.
‘I will decide tomorrow — and then speak.’
The diminutive forward is also concerned that his old links to Chelsea may cause problems with the West Ham faithful.
And, let’s face it, that’s a faithful you don’t want to upset.
‘I want to work in an environment that allows me to work with peace and tranquillity,’ he explained.
‘I’m concerned that not everybody among the fans seems to be pleased at the prospect of me coaching the team.’
Ah right. That explains the long face then…
Meanwhile, speaking (briefly) of Croatia, Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez could be playing the old ‘club before country’ game when it comes to Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard was ruled out for Wednesday’s vital World Cup qualifier against Croatia after Rafa sent him for a minor groin op.
Yeah, cheers Rafa, great timing.
Now the Liverpool manager is admitting that, actually, Stevie-Boy might be fit to face Manchester United this Saturday.
Hands up who didn’t see that coming?
‘Gerrard is still progressing, so you never know,’ announced Benitez. ‘The key is the fitness of the player — it makes a massive difference if he has confidence.’
If he does turn out for Liverpool on Saturday, it would appear to be confirmation – should any still be needed – that the financial rewards of the Champions League now outweigh the pride and privilege of playing for your country.
